Ready to rock'n'roll, enjoy your music.

Hi everyone,
While I was looking for a subject for an in class presentation, I though it could be fun to talk about my passion, the music. It could be women and beer as well but it was inadequate for the school (but not for the blog ;) ) And it's surfing on the web that I found this video about how vinyl are made.
Have a look at it,, it's pretty interesting.

Ready to rock'n'roll, enjoy your music.

MESDAMES, MESSIEURS, profitez bien.

Ready to rock'n'roll, enjoy your music.

To end my interview with Housse de Racket, I asked them to play something with two instruments I brought. A mini guitar and a melodica. I never thought they would say yes after seeing them, but I was wrong.
NB: I'd like to congratulate Pierre, who was enaugh brave to play with the guitare. It wasn't that easy.

LADIES AND GENTLEMENT, enjoy the show.

Housse de Racket live at Palais Nikaïa.

Ready to rock'n'roll, enjoy your music.

Last friday Housse de Racket was playing at Palais Nikaïa in Nice. It's the band for who's France paid close attention in 2008 because of their song "Oh Yeah". Anyway, last friday's gig was awesome as usual with Housse de Racket. Even if we weren't that much in the audience, they put a really good show. But it wasn't so difficult with an album as good their. Alésia, their second album, is a delicious piece of music in that world full of bulshit. You should listen to it carefully and if you have the occasion to see them in live, then do it ! It'll be one of the best gig you can see nowaday in pop music.
See it for yourself, and don't forget the interview ;)

Housse de Racket, l'interview: Pourquoi? ... because !

Last friday, I was lucky to interview a band I quiet like, that you should like too, It was Housse de Racket.
As they came to play their new album Alésia in Nice, between the hotel and the "pre gig" sandwich, Victor and Pierre accepted an interview with me and that's what came out of it.
(NB: you'll be able to see them playing with strange instrument in about 2 days)

Ready to rock'n'roll, enjoy your music.

R'c.

After reporting about 15 times our meeting, we finally did the inteview with Michel Portal after the gig. I've got to say that it's not the most easy conversation to follow but you can trust me, everything he said has a meaning. While I was interviewing him, I noticed he was a fast thinker, really. I mean, you ask him a question, he's gonna start the answere but after he will begin something else, and at the end he's gonna go back to your first question that even you were forgetting it. So an advise for who's going to interview him, be careful.
Have fun with the video :)

Michel Portal and Ambrose Akinmusire improvising at Jazz Festival Ramatuelle.

Ready to rock'n'roll, enjoy your music.

R'c.

Michel Portal had done the closing of the Jazz Festival of Ramatuelle. As any artist, he played his last album, in which Ambrose Akinmusire done the trompet. But surprise ! Ambrose played the day before and so he joined Mr Portal on the stage. Was it luck or was it planed? (You'll know it into the interview). Anyway, we had got a great show with the two of them playing together.
You have to know that Michel Portal, expert of free jazz and classic, has done many efforts to make his new album more melodious. So it makes it more listenable for everyone.
But never mind, and have a look at the video in which he plays a pure improvisation with Ambrose. It's awesome.

Ready to rock'n'roll, enjoy your music.

Ambrose Akinmusire, live at Jazz Festival Ramatuelle.

Ready to rock'n'roll, enjoy your music.

I had not heard of Ambrose Akinmusire before the jazz festival in Ramatuelle, neither in any musical or personal sense. However, after watching his concert and interviewing him, I made my discovery of the summer. On the trumpet Friday at the festival, he intrigued me with his jazz that was in the spirit of the old but with a sense of evolution. But what blew me away was the moment of the piano/trumpet duo. It was totally magical... That evening he allowed me to discover sounds that that I did not know were possible from a trumpet. In this one pieces reigned a whole story, sweet, delicate, sad, happy. Put simply... a concentration of emotion that makes the hairs on the back of the neck stand up and does not leave you indifferent. I asked myself if I was the only person in the audience to feel that, but when I saw the frozen faces of all the spectators, I understood. It was at the end of the song, when my neighbour and I looked at each other, dumbfounded, and we both let out a breathless “it's beautiful”, that I was reassured. I think that the public, just like me, needed time digest the beauty of what they had just witnessed, because the calm was followed by a storm of clapping from the whole audience.
What about the man? During the interview I discovered someone who was mature, straightforward, friendly and humble. Quite simply, the stuff of a champion.
That was Ambrose Akinmusire, at the jazz festival in Ramatuelle.

Ready to rock'n'roll, enjoy your music.

Laurent Mignard Duke Orchestra, live at Jazz Festival Ramatuelle.

Ready to rock'n'roll, enjoy your music.

R'c.

The Laurent Mignard Duke Orchestra is a complicated project that Laurent Mignard saw through to the end. After having done lots of public jazz shows, he decided to form an orchestra in order to play Duke Ellington's songs. For those that do not know who he is, Duke is one of the biggest names in jazz, his songs have gone down in history. Without a doubt one of the greatest inheritances from the 20th century that we have today.
That does not men that Laurent Mignard has simply chosen musicians willy nilly. Quite the opposite, it is a lot more complex than that, and it is a lot more work than it appears. First of all he has to rewrite the scores, then choose each individual musician until he finds the one that gets the closest to Duke's music. But go and watch the interview, it is all explained.
Put simply, to all the fans of Duke Ellington out there, this concert is unmissable. Laurent Mignard's orchestra gets ridiculously close to the original.

Ready to rock'n'roll, enjoy your music.

R'c.

This is an artist that you might discover right now, but I think you'll hear from him a lot. A genious like him, when you get it, you keep it. Ambrose Akinmusire, he's getting more more well-regarded, and he deserves it. I let him introduce himself.
NB: my mystake is forgetable, after 5 days of festival, I'm confused sometimes.

Reay to rock'n'roll, enjoy your music.

Ready to rock'n'roll, enjoy your music.

Laurent Mignard, conducteur, but has he always been one? I met him yesterday afternoon for a little interview which he willingly accepted. Because of how little we had, I had to shorten my questions, but the essentials are still there. I'll let you discover this character by watching the video.

Roy Hargrove live at Jazz Festival Ramatuelle.

Ready to rock'n'roll, enjoy your music.

R'c.

It was with elegance that Roy Hargrove arrived on stage at the théâtre de verdure: dressed in a beautiful white-beige suit and purple-mauve bow tie, armed with his trumpet and his musicians, he made quite an impression on the audience. 1, 2, 3, 4 and bang, the two hours of pure jazz had begun.
It took him several minutes before really getting into the concert. And yes, I can even tell you of this evolution. Start of concert: he seemed deadpan, showing no emotion on his face. Then after two songs, we witnessed a Roy who was slightly more easy going, who had adopted a relaxed approach. The next stage was the timely intervention of a trumpet, even though he was not at all in front of the microphone. Nd eventually, what made us realise he was really there, was when he started dancing. Not some old choreographed piece, but rather it was the dance of a man who could feel the music, filling the venue with a groovy atmosphere and which only got better.

Ready to rock'n'roll, enjoy your music.

Ahmad Jamal, live at Jazz Festival Ramatuelle.

Ready to rock'n'rolln enjoy your music.

R'c.

How about a little story? Once upon a time in a little village in the south of France there lived a retired postman who was a fan of this funny music that call jazz, to be precise. Every year he invited many artists to come and perform in his little village. And like in other tales, mine has its legend. Better put, yesterday it was Ahmad Jamal.
On top form for a man of 81, he made the atmosphere in the theatre electric, so much so that the audience ended up standing in applause as if they were being judged by an 'applaudometer'. But what about the music? The concert was simply magnificent. Four great men came together on the same stage. What a show... As for Ahmad, he played with unequalled graciousness.
So the evening got off to a good start? Well, let us just say that it ended even better. Encouraged by my friend Robert Yvon, I went backstage to meet Ahmad Jamal. Arriving in front of his dressing room, I explained to a lady and soon found myself with the pianist himself. Before re-writing the conversation, you ought to know that Ahmad had had a problem with his hotel which had got him down in the afternoon, and that he is currently working on a new project, an homage to Milles Davis. I quote:
« _ Hello Mister Jamal,
_ Hello.
_ How do you feel about playing here in Ramatuelle.
_ Well, it's great. It's my second time and I like it.
_ Was your experience with the hotels better the first or the second time? (smile)
_ (small smile)Both were interesting. Different, but interesting.
_ And if right now I was Milles David and I asked you to play with me. Would you do it?
(big smile from him)_ If you were who?
_ Milles Davis.
_ No !
_ Why?
_ 'cause you would be a leader and I'm a leader as well. But two leaders, it doesn't work. »

Enjoy the video.

On verra bien.

Yesterday, I should have interview Ahmad Jamal, but because of a problem in the hotel, we decided to report it, or even cancel it. So as couldn't do my interview, I went to the repetition before the concert. And there, I met Ahmad Jamal's manager, who let me hope to have an interview for tonight. Well, wish me luck.
By the way, check the video I posted, the first one who find Ahmad Jamal win.
NB: he's really in it.
See you guys tomorow for the LIVE of the concert.

Ga-a-ame/Jeudi n°4: Ol'Dirty - Lumberjack (version acoustique, hawaiienne, à la rache de l'arrache)

Boum BOUM boum.

Ready to rock'n'roll, enjoy your music.

Bank BANG bank. That is the acoustic sound that will please more than one person and make another's day. I proposed to Ol'Dirty about a month ago to do an filmed interview which they accepted enthusiastically, followed by a music improv sesh. And it is not that I finally have the pleasure of showing you this famous meeting. On the phone a few hours before, I said to Damien, the drummer, "I'm bringing loads of things from home" to which he replied "Yeh, we'll do it with whatever you've got!!!' and that was not false. The result? Well, here it is, could ntot have hoped for anything better. This video was made in one, and only one take.

Cold War Kids live at Plage De Rock, St Tropez.

When I was in Cambridge, I spent hours on the internet and scanning the black market for seats to see Cold War Kids in London, but without any luck. I came back to France empty-handed, my feet dragging, full of rage and frustration at having missed them. But to my greatest surprise they were playing in Port Grimaud, 5 minutes from my house. Who were my saviours? Plage De Rock! Thank you!!!
And how was the concert?
You might say that is was in two parts. The first part, made up exclusively of songs from the second album (which is not as good s the first album, by far) was a bit disappointing with musicians that were not at ease and an audience that was even less so. Then the second part where things really got off the ground. Essentially just songs from their first album this time, Cold War Kids knew how to captivate their audience, and managed to wake themselves up a bit!! From then onwards everything was different. Much cooler, much much better. For those that were not there, I'll let you imagine yourself in the audience with Cold War Kids 10 meters from you playing Hang Me Up To Dry.

Ready to rock'n'roll, enjoy your music.
