Michel Portal and Ambrose Akinmusire improvising at Jazz Festival Ramatuelle.

Michel Portal est venu clôturer cette  26eme édition du festival de jazz de Ramatuelle. Comme n'importe quel artiste, il a joué son dernier album dans lequel figurez vous, Ambrose Akinmusire a participé. Hé bah ouai, c'est lui qui a fait la trompette pour le dernier opus de Michel Portal. Et comme par hasard, il avait joué la veille à Ramatuelle. Coup de chance ou bien complo organisé (vous le saurez dans l'interview), nous avons eu droit a une très belle coopération entre ces deux grands musiciens, même trois car  Bojan Zulfikarpasic était venu se greffer au piano.
Il faut signaler tout de même, que dans cet album, Michel Portal, adepte de classique et de jazz libre, a fait un bel effort, puis ce qu'il est malgrès tout pas mal structuré, avec des passages mélodieux très élaboré. Ce qui en raccommodera peut-être plus d'un avec la musique de Michel.
En tout cas, quelle chanson ! pour finir ce concert... Nous avons eu droit a une pur improvisation entre Ambrose et Michel. Je vous laisse découvrir ça.

Michel Portal had done the closing of the Jazz Festival of Ramatuelle. As any artist, he played his last album, in which Ambrose Akinmusire done the trompet. But surprise ! Ambrose played the day before and so he joined Mr Portal on the stage. Was it luck or was it planed? (You'll know it into the interview). Anyway, we had got a great show with the two of them playing together.

You have to know that Michel Portal, expert of free jazz and classic, has done many efforts to make his new album more melodious. So it makes it more listenable for everyone.

But never mind, and have a look at the video in which he plays a pure improvisation with Ambrose. It's awesome.

Ambrose Akinmusire, live at Jazz Festival Ramatuelle.

Je ne connaissais pas Ambrose Akinmusire avant le festival de jazz de Ramatuelle. Ni sur le point musical, ni sur le point humain. Et bien après avoir vu le concert et l'avoir interviewé, j'y ai fait ma découverte de l'été. A la trompette le jeudi du festival, il m'a tout d'abords bluffé avec un jazz qui était à la fois dans la continuité de ce qui se faisait avant mais aussi dans l'évolution. Mais là où il m'a totalement envouté, ce fût au moment du duo piano/trompette. C'était tout bonnement magique... Il m'a fait découvrir ce soir là des sons à la trompette que je ne connaissais pas du tout. Mais pas seulement. Dans son morceau vivait toute une histoire, douce, délicate, triste, joyeuse, bref... Un concentré d'émotion qui vous tape en pleine tête et qui ne peut pas vous laissé indifférent. Je me suis demandé si j'était le seul dans le théâtre à ressentir ça. Mais quand j'ai vu le visage figé de tous les spectateurs, j'ai compris. Et ce fût d'ailleurs à la fin de la chanson que mon sentiment c'est conforté, lorsque qu'avec mon voisin nous nous sommes regardé, perdu, et que d'un léger souffle nous avons murmuré « c'est beau ». Je pense que le public, tout comme moi, a mit du temps avant de s'en remettre, car il y eu t-un calme avant la tempête provoqué par les clapes du publique entier.

Quand à l'homme? Durant l'interview j'avais à faire à quelqu'un de mature, simple, sympathique et humble. Bref, tout l'étoffe d'un champion.

C'était Ambrose Akinmusire, au festival de Jazz à Ramatuelle.

I had not heard of Ambrose Akinmusire before the jazz festival in Ramatuelle, neither in any musical or personal sense. However, after watching his concert and interviewing him, I made my discovery of the summer. On the trumpet Friday at the festival, he intrigued me with his jazz that was in the spirit of the old but with a sense of evolution. But what blew me away was the moment of the piano/trumpet duo. It was totally magical... That evening he allowed me to discover sounds that that I did not know were possible from a trumpet. In this one pieces reigned a whole story, sweet, delicate, sad, happy. Put simply... a concentration of emotion that makes the hairs on the back of the neck stand up and does not leave you indifferent. I asked myself if I was the only person in the audience to feel that, but when I saw the frozen faces of all the spectators, I understood. It was at the end of the song, when my neighbour and I looked at each other, dumbfounded, and we both let out a breathless “it's beautiful”, that I was reassured. I think that the public, just like me, needed time digest the beauty of what they had just witnessed, because the calm was followed by a storm of clapping from the whole audience.

What about the man? During the interview I discovered someone who was mature, straightforward, friendly and humble. Quite simply, the stuff of a champion.

That was Ambrose Akinmusire, at the jazz festival in Ramatuelle.

Laurent Mignard Duke Orchestra, live at Jazz Festival Ramatuelle.

Laurent Mignard Duke Orchestra est un projet compliqué que Laurent Mignard a su mener à bout. Après être passé de la fanfare au jazz, ce dernier a décidé de monter un orchestre afin de rejouer les chansons de Duke Ellington. Pour ce qui ne savent pas qui c'est, Duke est un des plus grand du jazz, ses chansons ont marqué les esprits et les répertoires. Sans doute un des plus beaux héritage du 20eme siècle que l'on ai.

Cela ne veut pas dire que Laurent Mignard a simplement prit des musiciens au hazard et leur a donné les partitions de Duke. Bien au contraire, c'est plus complexe que ça, et c'est beaucoup plus de travail qu'il n'y paraît. Tout d'abords réécrire les partitions, puis choisir chaque musiciens un par un pour trouver ceux qui se rapprochent le plus de la musique de Duke. Mais allez voir l'interview, tout est dit dedans.

En bref, avis à tous les fans de Duke Ellington, le concert est indispensable. L'orchestre de Laurent Mignard ressemble affolement à l'original.

The Laurent Mignard Duke Orchestra is a complicated project that Laurent Mignard saw through to the end. After having done lots of public jazz shows, he decided to form an orchestra in order to play Duke Ellington's songs. For those that do not know who he is, Duke is one of the biggest names in jazz, his songs have gone down in history. Without a doubt one of the greatest inheritances from the 20^th century that we have today.

That does not men that Laurent Mignard has simply chosen musicians willy nilly. Quite the opposite, it is a lot more complex than that, and it is a lot more work than it appears. First of all he has to rewrite the scores, then choose each individual musician until he finds the one that gets the closest to Duke's music. But go and watch the interview, it is all explained.

Put simply, to all the fans of Duke Ellington out there, this concert is unmissable. Laurent Mignard's orchestra gets ridiculously close to the original.

Ambrose Akinmusire, l'interview, les révélations.

Voici un artiste que vous découvrez peut-être, mais dont vous allez entendre parler longtemps. Un jeune talent comme lui, une fois qu'on le tient on ne le lâche plus. Ambrose Akinmusire est un jeune trompettiste en plein essor de popularité, et attention, il va faire mal. Je le laisse se présenter, il le fera mieux que moi.
PS: ma faute dans l'interview est totalement justifiable, après 5 jours de festival, je m'embrouille les pinceaux.

This is an artist that you might discover right now, but I think you'll hear from him a lot. A genious like him, when you get it, you keep it. Ambrose Akinmusire, he's getting more more well-regarded, and he deserves it. I let him introduce himself. 

NB: my mystake is forgetable, after 5 days of festival, I'm confused sometimes.

Laurent Mignard Duke Orchestra, l'interview du chef.

Laurent Mignard, chef d'orchestre, mais fanfaronneur avant tout. J'ai fait sa rencontre hier après midi pour une petite interview, qu'il a accepté sans trop de mal. A cause du peu de temps dont nous disposions, j'ai du écourter mes questions, mais tout l'essentiel y est. Je vous laisse découvrir le personnage qu'il est a travers la vidéo.
